2005 NCAA Fencing Champs

March 22, 2005

Valerie Providenza reacts to her early win over Olympian Emily Jacobson of Columbia, sparking Providenza to a 9-0 record on the final day while her fellow sabre Mariel Zagnuis closed 8-1.

Alicja Kryczalo win over Metta Thompson gave Notre Dame an early in the foil showdown that also included two other top fencers in Stanford's Iris Zemmerman (fencing with the ND pair) and Princeton's Jacqueline Leahy (paired with OSU).

The foil corral was the place to be in Sunday's second-to-last round, as Notre Dame and Ohio State split four bouts while the strip was surrounded by vocal supporters from both schools.

Andrea Ament leaps into the arms of Alicja Kryczalo while the vocal Irish fans roar in approval during the bouts vs. Ohio State.

Amy Orlando's win over Penn State's Case Szarwark - with Kerry Walton and other Irish fencers looking on - helped Orlando and Walton deliver a clutch sweep of their final six bouts (four vs. PSU and two vs. Duke's Anne Kerschmer).

Alicja Kryczalo fenced Notre Dame's final round-robin bout of the four-day tournament and delivered the win that clinched at least a share of the NCAA title.

Several members of the Notre Dame fencing program traveled on their own to the NCAAs and joined the 11 competitors anc coaches on the victory stand.
