Athletics director Kevin White officially introduces Dave Schrage as the 19th baseball coach in school history during a Tuesday afternoon press conference on the Notre Dame campus.

Coach Schrage smiles during his opening remarks at Tuesday's press conference. The new Irish skipper comes to Notre Dame following a successful four-year run at the University of Evansville that culminated in 2006 with a 43-22 record, Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles, as well as an NCAA regional championship final and a No. 19 national ranking at season's end.

Among Coach Schrage's stated goals at Tuesday's press conference is to ensure that not only is Notre Dame a perennial national championship contender, but also remains firmly among the discussion as one of the nation's elite baseball programs.

Coach Schrage had numerous supporters in the crowd on Tuesday, including his wife Jody and daughters Brianne and Kaitlyn.

Another familiar face in attendance at Tuesday's press conference was former Notre Dame catcher ('67-68) and Indiana governor Joe Kernan, now the principal owner of the reigning Class-A Midwest League champion South Bend Silverhawks (an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate).

After fielding numerous questions from the assembled media members, Coach Schrage tries on a Notre Dame cap and finds it to be a perfect fit.

Coach Schrage inherits a Notre Dame squad that went 45-17-1 in 2006, won its fifth consecutive BIG EAST Conference tournament title, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive season. The Irish also sport a .728 winning percentage during the current decade (2000-06), ranking fourth among all Division I programs.

During his comments on Tuesday, Coach Schrage pointed to the exceptional support of the Notre Dame administration, including University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., and athletics director Kevin White, as one of the most appealing aspects of what Schrage called his dream job.

The Schrage family poses for its first portrait as a member of the Notre Dame and South Bend community (clockwise from lower left: Jody, Kaitlyn, Brianne and Dave Schrage).
