May. 4, 1997 Notre Dame to Meet Loyola (Md.) in the First Round of NCAA Men's Lacrosse TournamentNOTRE DAME, Ind. - In a rematch of a game played on March 15, the ninth-ranked University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team (9-2) will play sixth-ranked and sixth-seeded Loyola College (9-3) in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Irish will face the Greyhounds on Sunday, May 11 at noon at Towson, Md. Notre Dame, making its sixth straight appearance and seventh in the last eight years, lost a 12-11 decision to Loyola earlier in the season in Baltimore, Md. In that contest, the Irish came back from a 9-6 second-half deficit to tie the Greyhounds (11-11) with 4:37 to play in the game. Loyola scored the game-winning goal with 2:45 left in regulation. Notre Dame is 1-6 all-time in NCAA tournament games. The Irish first made the 12-team NCAA field in 1990 and has played every year since 1992. Notre Dame's only tournament win was against Duke in 1995 when the Irish stunned the fifth-ranked Blue Devils 12-10 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time ever in school history. Notre Dame is 0-6 all-time versus Loyola and this will be the first time the two teams will be facing each other in the NCAA tournament. The winner of the Notre Dame/Loyola game will meet third-seed Syracuse (10-2) in quarterfinal action on Saturday, May 17 at noon in Hempstead, N.Y.
