Volunteer Assistant Coach

Alma Mater:
Notre Dame '01

Former Notre Dame All-America midfielder Steve Bishko is in his second year as a volunteer assistant coach at Notre Dame. Upon graduating from the University in 2001, he played two seasons for Major League Lacrosse's (MLL) Rochester Rattlers under current Irish assistant Guy Van Arsdale. Bishko works for Shamrock Net Design in South Bend and also is responsible for creating and maintaining the website www.ndlacrosse.org.

Twice a first team all-Great Western Lacrosse League selection, Bishko was a key to Notre Dame's magical 2001 season that featured a program-best 14-2 record, an all-time high No. 2 national ranking, and a 13-9 upset of #3 Johns Hopkins to send the Irish to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA semifinals. A two-year starter, he finished his career with 52 goals and 22 assists (74 points). Bishko was most effective in big games, tallying seven goals and three assists in his six NCAA tournament games. He was named a third-team All-American by the USILA in his senior season, becoming just the second Irish midfielder to earn All-America honors and the first to gain a spot on one of the three teams.

Bishko played in all 56 games during his Irish career, just two shy of the school record. His total of 180 ground balls, including a team-high 69 for the final four team, ranks eighth on the all-time list.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics, Bishko was selected by the Rattlers in the third round of the MLL draft as the 13th overall pick. In his initial pro season, he helped the Rattlers to the first-ever MLL Championship Weekend, in 2001. He played in 22 games, accumulating nine points and 40 ground balls before suffering a dislocated knee.

A native of West Islip, N.Y., Bishko graduated from West Islip High School in 1998 after being a standout in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. Bishko set the school record for assists in a season by a midfielder and helped his lacrosse team to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.

Bishko and his wife Katie, a law student at Notre Dame, reside in South Bend.
