Notre Dame Men's Lacrosse Team Picked 11th In Coaches' Poll

Jan. 6, 2001

Notre Dame, Ind.-- The University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team, which returns eight starters from last season 10-4 squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA tournament, has been chosen 11th in the Face-Off Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Coaches' Poll.

In addition, senior attack David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.), named to last year's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) honorable mention All-America team, was selected as a Preseason Second Team All-American. Also, three other Irish senior standouts - attack Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.), goalie Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) and defenseman Mike Adams (Wilton, Conn.) were recognized on the preseason honorable mention All-America squad.

Defending national champion Syracuse is the preseason No. 1 choice. The Orangemen were followed by Princeton, Virginia, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Loyola, Duke, Maryland and Hofstra and North Carolina. Ulrich was the team's second-leading scorer with 17 goals and a team-high and personal best 32 assists for 49 points. The 32 assists by Ulrich, who has been Notre Dame assist leader in each of his three campaigns, tied the single-season assist mark. He ranks second all-time with 81 career assists and his 131 career points places him sixth on the scoring list. His 2.29 assists per game tied him for ninth nationally in that statistical category.

Glatzel tallied personal best of 38 goals and 18 assists for 56 points this season to lead the Irish in scoring for the first time in his career last season. In addition to starting all 14 games, he collected 61 grounds balls, second most on the team.

Howell, a two-year starter, played all but 19 minutes throughout all of last season. He made 153 saves and allowed 119 goals while posted an 8.70 goals against average (tied for 11th nationally) and .563 save percentage (tied for 17th nationally). Howell tied for 11th nationally in

Adams was a 14-game starter for the Irish as a junior last season. He scored three goals and collected 43 ground balls. As team in 2000, Notre Dame had a 9.07 goals against average.
