Men's Swimming Compiles Best Record Since '93

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Notre Dame's men's swimming and diving team wrapped up its 1996-97 dual-meet season with a 162-138 win at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With the win the Irish finish at 7-5, the best dual-meet record in four years since the 1992-93 team went 11-2.

Notre Dame won eight of the 16 events but used its depth and balance to clinch the meet. The Irish won the first event of the meet as they claimed the 200-yard medley relay in 1:37.04. Notre Dame then won seven individual events with seven different swimmers.

After the first event, the Irish won four of the next five events as Robert Fetter won the 1000 freestyle, Mike Donovan won the 100 backstroke, Steele Whowell won the 100 breaststroke and Chris Fugate won the 200 butterfly.

Herb Huesman claimed the three-meter diving, Josh Saylor won the 200 backstroke and Wes Richardson was victorious in the 500 freestyle to wrap up the win for the Irish.

Notre Dame men's and women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool Feb. 19-22 at the BIG EAST championships in Piscataway, N.J.
