December 7, 1996 Irish Women's Swimming Wins ND Invitational; Men Finish SecondNOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's women's swimmers won the Notre Dame Invitational with 1053.5 points, ahead of Connecticut (886.5) and Milwaukee (24.0). The Irish were led by senior Erin Brooks' meet record 2:02.61 time in the finals of the 200 backstroke. Linda Gallo won the 1650 freestyle for the Irish with a time of 17:12.11, Courtney South won the 100 freestyle at :53.10, Shannon Suddarth won the 200 breaststroke at 2:23.11, and Alison Newell won the 200 butterfly at 2:06.11. The 400 freestyle relay team of Linda Gallo, Alison Newell, Karen Daylor and Courtney South won with a time of 3:33.20. The men's team lost by one point, finishing second to Connecticut, 922.5 to 921.5. The Irish led through much of the meet, with freshman John Lubker winning the 1650 freestyle at 15:55.43, and sophomore Scott Zumbach the 200 butterfly at 1:52.95, but Connecticut's 400 freestyle relay team pulled out the win in the final race with a time of 3:03.54, less than four seconds ahead of the Irish. The women's team will see action next at Hawaii on December 30. The men's team returns to action in January, at the Longhorn Diving competition Jan. 5-7. December 6, 1996 Irish Men Move Into Lead After Second Day of Notre Dame InvitationalNotre Dame, Ind. --- The Irish men's swimming squad moved into first place after two competition at the Notre Dame Invitational. The Irish men's squad has a 708-point total through Friday's events. Connecticut is second with 664, followed by Buffalo 481 and Wisconsin-Milwaukee 88. The men's meet record for the 100-yard breaststroke fell during the day. Sean Tedesco of Connecticut finished with a time of 56.82. The old record was set by Carl Carlson of Buffalo (57.41) on December 1, 1995. Other winners for Notre Dame were: Scott Zumback in the 400-yard individual medley (4:00.95); and Herb Huesman in the 3-meter diving (504.25 points). December 5, 1996 Men Second to Connecticut After First Day of Notre Dame InvitationalNOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Through the first day at the Notre Dame Invitational, Notre Dame's men's swimming team stands in second place behind Connecticut. The three-day Invitational which features four men's teams and three women's teams, continues tomorrow and concludes Sunday. Notre Dame's men's team took first place in three events. Freshman John Lubker won the 500 yard freestyle in a personal best time of 4:37.50. In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Scott Zumbach won by .18 seconds. Another freshman, Herb Huesman finished first in the one-meter diving competition. Tomorrow's action at the Rolfs Aquatic Center begins with qualifying heats at 10:30 a.m. with race finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Men's Standings Through Thursday 1. Connecticut --- 422.0 2.
